Procedure

The portrait process begins with a meeting between client and artist to discuss everything the client has in mind with regard to portrait size, mood, pose and attire. The artist will bring reference materials to help the client fully understand the choices available. Clothing and background options will be chosen, and an appointment will be set for photographs to be taken of the portrait’s subject. Depending on the chosen background, the photos can be taken at the artist’s studio, or client’s home or office. The artist will take digital photographs of the subject in various poses and settings in order to obtain the most natural and flattering look and lighting. Expect this appointment to take approximately ninety minutes. The artist will then narrow these multiple images down for viewing with the client so that the most desirable aspects of all the photos can be integrated into the final painting. The artist will use that information to design a color sketch of the intended composition, and establish an approximate completion date for the portrait. Upon client’s approval of the sketch and timeline, the artist will request a payment of 50% of the total portrait fee before beginning the painting. As the painting progresses, the artist may desire one or two live sittings (if subject or locale affords) to properly capture light, proportion and complexion. This can be done in an hour or two. The client may request e-mailed progress photos of the portrait while it is on the easel.

Portrait Sizes

Canvas sizes vary according to composition, but the artist prefers to paint all subjects as close to life-size as possible.

Framing

Portraits will be delivered unframed, but the artist is available to assist in choosing a  frame if the client so desires.
